Our Operation

•EEHG is a regional/community-based operation determined by student need and teacher availability and led by a Coordinator. •The Coordinator’s important role is to hold the program together within the community. Specifically, the Coordinator helps to identify teachers and students, obtains and monitors the commitment of teachers, parents/guardians, and students, ensures that selected venues provide a safe and ready environment equipped for learning, and oversees the smooth execution of the program within the community. •The program supports a 2-year curriculum, targeting students in Grade 10 (4th Form) and Grade 11 (5th Form), with average class sizes of 15 but no more than 20, meeting 2-3 times per week. •Local teachers are supported by online instructors residing both in Guyana and overseas. •Learning venues are equipped with computers, internet capabilities and other necessary tools. •A snack is provided at each session. •Strong parental commitment is required with parents/guardians volunteering as class monitors once per month. •Signed agreements relating to commitments and classroom conduct are required from parents/guardians and students. • EEHG launched its pilot in 2 locations - Georgetown and East Coast Demerara - in April 2024, offering instruction in English Language and Mathematics. With the help of its donors, EEHG expects to expand the number of locations and subjects offered.

Our Story

Expanding Education Horizons in Guyana Inc. (EEHG) is a registered non-profit organization governed by a Board of 13 Guyana-born Directors, resident in Guyana and overseas. The establishment of the organization resulted from a group of Guyanese noting an approximate 44% decline throughout a 6-year period (2017-2022) in the number of learners who were tested in English Language and Mathematics at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA, previously known as the Common Entrance Examination - the gateway to post-primary education in Guyana), compared to those who persevered through to Grade 11 to write the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) English A and Mathematics. Over the same period, CSEC passing rates for Grades I through III were as low as 59% for students who wrote the English A examination, and were consistently below 50% for those who wrote the Mathematics examination. English A and Mathematics are core subjects, success in which is required to enter most post-secondary programs of study and to compete for entry-level jobs in the public and private sectors. The need for improved student outcomes is obvious if equity and inclusivity are to be achieved as individuals seek to improve the quality of their lives. The group recognized that, in today's Guyana, additional opportunities for teaching and learning outside of the classroom ('lessons') are necessary for success at these examinations. A lack of access (most likely for financial reasons) to this after-school support places many young Guyanese at risk of not being equipped to participate in the development of the rapidly growing Guyana economy - with all the well-known concomitant effects of having large sectors of a society left behind. The EEHG Board is passionate about its mission to help economically-disadvantaged high school students and early school leavers achieve the academic credentials to make the transition to post-secondary learning institutions and entry level jobs.
